What is anti-virus protection on BlackBerry smartphones

Viruses are a type of third-party application designed with malicious intent to cause harm to computer systems. These applications are generically termed malware, as are trojan horse, worm, and spyware applications.
BlackBerry tools provide effective anti-virus protections for a BlackBerry deployment. They use containment methods that are designed to prevent malware that might gain access to the BlackBerry smartphone from causing damage to the BlackBerry smartphone, its applications and its data, and also to the corporate network.

Anti-virus protection on all BlackBerry smartphones (BlackBerry Enterprise Solution and BlackBerry Internet Service)

BlackBerry smartphone applications include inherent virus protection and spyware protection that is designed to contain and prevent the spread of viruses and spyware to other applications. Application controls are available on BlackBerry smartphones that are running on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server or on the BlackBerry Internet Service. BlackBerry smartphone users can use the application controls on their BlackBerry smartphones to prevent the installation of specific third-party applications and to limit the permissions of third-party applications. See the "BlackBerry Internet Service Security Feature Overview" for more information on using BlackBerry smartphone application controls to protect a BlackBerry smartphone running on the BlackBerry Internet Service against malware.

Anti-virus protection through the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution

The BlackBerry Enterprise Solution is designed to provide anti-virus protection through its malware protection. The BlackBerry Enterprise Solution includes tools that provide out-of-the-box protection against all malware. Administrators can use IT policy and application control policies on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, and BlackBerry smartphone users can use application controls on BlackBerry smartphones to contain malware by controlling third-party Java application access to BlackBerry smartphone resources and applications. See “Protecting the BlackBerry device platform against malware” for more information on using the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution tools to protect a BlackBerry deployment against malware.

The BlackBerry® Internet Service has an anti-spam system that is designed to block spam email messages that are sent to your BlackBerry email address. This feature helps to protect you against the inconvenience and potential privacy threat of email messages that are not intended specifically for you.
For additional control of spam email messages, you can create email message filters to prevent unwanted email messages from being delivered to your BlackBerry device.

Cause 5

The recipient's BlackBerry smartphone is not in area of wireless coverage.

Resolution

Verify that the recipient's BlackBerry smartphone is in an area of wireless coverage.

Cause 6

A spam guard or virus scanner is deleting or moving the request.

Resolution

Locate the contact request message in the spam folder, mark it as safe, and move it into the inbox. The request will then be delivered to the BlackBerry smartphone.
Some messaging server spam guards delete suspicious email messages immediately. In this case, set a rule for the spam guard to allow email messages from the recipient's address.

Don’t worry, the BlackBerry stays

PETALING JAYA: The 1.5 million BlackBerry users in Malaysia need not worry.
There are no plans to ban the smartphone device here, al though Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have done so.
Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim has ruled out any move to ban the use of the gadget.
“There would be heavy opposition if it was banned,” he said, adding that top-level government agencies, including the police, were also using the device.

U.S Will Hold Talks With Countries, Canadian Firm On Blackberry Issue

U.S Will Hold Talks With Countries, Canadian Firm On Blackberry Issue

WASHINGTON, Aug 6 (Bernama) -- The United States has initiated talks with countries like India, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia, as well as the Canada-based firm RIM that owns BlackBerry, to address the "legitimate" security concerns of these nations, Press Trust of India said Friday.

"We are reaching out to those countries -- the UAE, Saudi Arabia, India and others -- to understand the security concerns and see if we can work collaboratively to find solutions.

"So that's a process, which is ongoing here," State Department spokesman P J Crowley told reporters at his daily news conference.

The United States has also been in touch with RIM, the Canadian company that operates the BlackBerry network worldwide.

"We're going to have follow-on meetings with RIM to try to understand fully the issues that have been raised to the company and see if we can determine how to meet both the security needs that these countries are expressing and also ensure the free flow of information as we are advocating," Crowley said.

Earlier in the day, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said: "We are taking time to consult and analyse the full range of interests and issues at stake because we know that there is a legitimate security concern.

"But there's also a legitimate right of free use and access. So, I think we will be pursuing both technical and expert discussions as we go forward."

If some of these countries follow through on the BlackBerry ban that they have announced, it would have an impact on the U.S. government and its diplomats operating in different countries.

"So, we are directly affected by what has been suggested. But obviously, we know that both American businessmen, American citizens travelling abroad, the citizens of other countries would be affected as well," Crowley said.

At this point, the U.S. is gaining information and perspective on the issues concern as such technologies, security and regulatory before suggesting solutions, he said.

Saudi Arabia wants in too and threaten to shut down Blackberry

Last weekend, the United Arab Emirates officially announced they were freezing all BlackBerry services in the country due to the lack of RIM's permission to snoop on users' information and messages sent/received.  As the same is going on in India right now, Saudi Arabia wants in too and threaten to shut down the services as of this Friday. The suspension of BlackBerry services because as of now the BlackBerry "in its present state does not meet regulatory requirements."  Things have not been looking good for RIM domestically to begin with as many suggest their last straw to get up top was yesterday's opened curtains on the BlackBerry Torch 9800, but now three countries threatening to remove BlackBerry services is on a whole new level.

Report: RIM Agrees to UAE Monitoring Request

A day after the United Arab Emirates threatened to suspend some BlackBerry services for fear they are a threat to national security, Research In Motion (RIMM) is taking steps to allay those concerns. First, it released a statement emphasizing its commitment to security.
“RIM respects both the regulatory requirements of government and the security and privacy needs of corporations and consumers,” the statement reads. “RIM does not disclose confidential regulatory discussions that take place with any government. However, RIM assures its customers that it is committed to continue delivering highly secure and innovative products.”
Second, it met with UAE authorities and offered to give them the information they need to monitor BlackBerry services.
“After some persuasion, the (BlackBerry) representative agreed that they can provide the Metadata of the message ie the IP address of the Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) and PIN & IMEI of the BlackBerry mobile,” internal notes from the meeting reveal. “The concerned internet service provider can also tell the location of the services as well. From these information, the security agencies can easily locate the BES and obtain the decrypted message. They also stated that they have a setup to help the security agencies in tracking the messages in which security agencies are interested in.”

White Bold II From Maxis

When White Bold II were introduced, the hype was so great, people just can't wait to get hold of it, after the usual, classic black covers for
BlackBerry (BB).
Then Maxis announced they are bringing in the Whites, Bold II 9700 who should decides to be amongst the first to grab it, if not Nelson Rizal.
BBUGMy was told, Nelson, or fondly known among us as Nel, has been using Storm I for about a year, after he purchased it in Jakarta.
"The BB has been loyal to me, since I got it in Jakarta.
"A great BB with bug touch screen, but unfortunately it also has some touch screen problems and frequently hangs on me," said Nelson, when asked about his newest BB collection.
Nelson said, sometimes the old faithful Storm I would hang for almost 15 minutes (much to his frustration), and after the Whites were introduced, back in June for Malaysia market,he decided it was about time for him to get a new BB devices, since as he put it, "I'm gonna do lots of chats (wink wink) and answering questions".

He then decided that his choice would be BB Bold II and placed the order for the Whites with Maxis.
Then the email came, notifiying Nelson that he should be getting his BB White Bold II in Menara Maxis at 3 pm on June 27, 2010.
With happy heart, Nelson met the store supervisor, Mr Ravindran Nagappan who hand over the device to the rightful owner.
It turned out to be, Nelson is the 44th owner of the White Bold II!
"I'm a happy person, thinking no more touch screen (believed us, we know hehe). Got everything transferred and installed and my new BB White Bold II is ready to use.

"I'm quite happy with the processor and the memory. No more hangs (finally!), lags, easier to type (we told you so) fast access with its sleek design.
"Even so, I do miss the Storm I big screen, and I do feel the smaller and harder keypads are the slight downside of my new Whites," said the proud owner.
It has been a month since Nelson converted from the touch screen Storm I to keypads punching White Bold II and now he is happily chatting away with his friends and fans without hassle and glitch.

How about you?
