RIM Introduces New Geolocation Feature with No GPS Required

RIM introduced geolocation feature is a great one because it does not require GPS.The new service can get your location in seconds using cellphone towers. This is similar to how the “My Location” service works in Google Maps. This new service works indoors and lets any app get access to your approximate location without having to query the GPS. The only two catches is that this new service only works on OS 5.0+ and requires a carrier that has enabled this feature.

Features
  • Reverse geocoding capabilities enable applications to convert a user’s latitude and longitude to an address
  • Integration with BlackBerry Maps Service offers a variety of app features, ranging from navigation directions to POI recommendations. BlackBerry Maps Service compliments Locate Service by providing map displays that can be invoked or embedded to indicate a user’s location
